There are lots of great books, both fiction and non-fiction, about
Australian life and culture. Some of Australia's best writers include
Henry Lawson, Banjo Patterson, Sally Morgan, Thomas Keneally, and Jil Ker
Conway - pick up a book or collection of stories by any of these authors
and you won't be disappointed. Some great non-fiction titles include:
In a Sunburned Country - Bill Bryson

Edited by Larry Habegger
A Secret Country - John Pilger
The Fatal Shore - Robert Hughes
A Lucky Country - Donald Home

Films
Films from Down Under are often in a class of their own, and there are so
many great ones there's no way to list them all. A few lesser-known favorites:
The Dish - The true story of how the radio telescope in Parkes, a small New South Wales town, came
to broadcast to the world Neal Armstrong's first steps on the moon.
The Castle - Shot in a week on a shoestring budget, this funny look
at an Australian family being forced from their home winds up on lots of
Aussie's favorites list. The dialogue is the "ridgididge"... so
much so that the film is screened to Indian students training to operate telephone call
centers, so that they can become familiar with Australian expressions!
